UX / UI - AAMI Smartplates, Cannes Gold Lion Winner
The innovative Smart Plates app was developed so that learner drivers can turns their phones into a digital logbook and even blocks calls while they are on the road.
The Challenge
Of all the road traffic deaths in Australia 45% are young people. The Australian Government requires learner drivers to record a minimum of 120 hours of supervised driving on a variety of road conditions using a hand written logbook in order to receive their learner’s license.
The Problem
The problem is that learner drivers need to manually record all their log book hours including the road conditions which is very time consuming.
The Approach
The approach was to conduct qualitative research by interviewing current learner drivers to uncover insights. Then look for opportunities that can be converted into features to be include in the app.
A user flow was mapped out and then a lo-fidelity prototype was built. User testing was conducted, assigning specific tasks. Insights were gathered which were implemented into the build of our MVP.
Multiple designs were created and then put to research. After several iterations a design style was in place to suit both Android and iOS.
Several sprints later and 1.0 was released. A pilot program allowed 100 target users to start using the app and give feedback or suggestions from within the app.
Methodologies
- User Interviews
- Affinity Mapping
- Journey Mapping
- User Tasks
- Information Architecture
- User Flows - Prototyping
- Usability Testing
The Result
An app that automatically tracks your journey via GPS and generates a log book for submission. Interaction design also helped give the user feedback and brought the app to life. Other clever features such as 'Road Block' automatically sends a text to the person trying to contact you, letting them know you will get back to them later.
